Introduction
In 2013, the Bachelor Program in Indigenous Culture and Design was established under the direction of former Dean of College of Design, Yu Chao-Ching, Associate Professor Walis Wu (Department of Commercial Design), Lecturer Lu Chien-Ming (Department of Architecture), and Lecturer Oto Micyang.
“Sustainable Environment” and “Learning from Nature” are the principles of the Bachelor Program in Indigenous Culture and Design, which reflect the university’s philosophy of “All Around Education” and respect for multiculturalism. The program combines professional design skills with tribal teaching. Practical service-learning is used as a means of testing the effectiveness of learning. The integration of courses and the continuity of content across years allows students to learn both Aboriginal humanities and design skills without compromising their knowledge.
The program accepts indigenous students only, and recruits twenty students per year as a single class. Students are required to pass the entry interview and portfolio examination in order to enter the program. There are four undergraduate classes in the program. As of 2023, consists a total number of students are 44 indigenous students.

Our department upholds the educational philosophy of embracing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and sustainable environmental principles in design education. The curriculum integrates cultural skills as core knowledge, enhancing humanistic awareness and promoting a sense of love and care for the local environment as a primary focus.
The education mission of the Bachelor Program of Design in Indigenous Culture at CYCU is to combine indigenous values and professional design ability. In order to create a learning environment of indigenous culture for students, the program implements indigenous values and integrates tribal environmental issues that are based on traditional indigenous wisdom. Through this integrative framework, students can practice their design ability with the knowledge of indigenous culture and values.
Undergraduate
In the first- and second-year curriculum, the primary goal is for students to acquire indigenous traditional knowledge. Therefore, more indigenous teachers teach freshman and sophomore students than at other levels. For indigenous culture acquisition, the program offers courses such as Ecology and Culture, Verbal Context and Culture and Design and Culture of Indigenous.
In the junior and senior curriculum, students strengthen their design ability through working with non-indigenous professors from the Department of Architecture, the Department of Commercial Design, the Department of Interior Design, and the Department of Landscape Architecture.
The curriculum will include micro-courses that focus on the traditional wisdom of the indigenous peoples and humanistic care, and the teaching objectives are based on the values and perspectives of the indigenous peoples’ cultural identity.
Linking the environmental and social issues faced by the tribes and applying the wisdom of indigenous cultures to various professional designs. The professionalism of environmental care and the appropriateness of the teaching mechanism will enable Aboriginal students to integrate into the learning environment of community life and tribal humanism, and at the same time, to explore more aspects of design perspectives and ideas and to think more diversely.
